Brand Allegiance – Victorinox Aesthetics

So my allegiance to Victorinox wasn’t a conscious decision. When awarded a holdall for 5 years service at Electronic Arts, little did I know that experiencing something so well engineered would ensure the Swiss brand become a first choice for practical, on-the-go gear.

Hunter Mach 1 Watch
Victorinox Swiss Army Brand Hunter Mach 1Victorinox Swiss Army Brand Hunter Mach 1I’ve only ever seen one of these for sale, anywhere – and I bought it.  I love the retro  feel; it carries a seventies vibe with the squaircle frame and Hunter logo.  It’s heavy too; weighing more than expected gives it a solid and well constructed feel. It was originally available with an all rubber strap (left), an all chrome bracelet, and a rubber inlaid chrome bracelet (right).  The model I purchased has the latter strap, and I think it provides additional styling very unique to this watch.

The Hunter Mach 1 gave way for the Mach 2 and Mach 3.  Both of these later models have a digital backplate with additional functionality; nice watches for sure.  However, the Mach 1 has a different feel; it reflects an era where design was bold and the time alone was enough.

Chrono Classic Watch
Victorinox Chrono Classic Watch
Pretty much everything one would expect from a classic looking, well built chronograph at a fraction of the usual price.

Stainless Steel, Water Resistant to 330 feet with Depth Dial, 3 Chrono Sub-Dials, a sturdy bracelet and firm clasp.

The backplate guilloché decoration is a clear reference to the shape and casing of the Swiss Army Officer’s Knife; a tribute to the origins and values of the Victorinox brand.

Farmer Penknife
Victorinox Farmer PenknifeThe Victorinox Farmer is a popular 93mm Alox scaled Swiss Army Knife. It is similar to the historical Soldier (1961 design), with the addition of a wood saw and keyring. Many people comment that the extra width of this model makes it more comfortable to hold compared to 2 layer models such as the Pioneer.

Introduced in 1957 as model number 2224, and used the ELINOX tang stamp until 1975 when it was stamped as a Victorinox model. The silver Alox Farmer with the Victorinox shield (0.8241.26) started production in 2000.

Architect Holdall
217238_1_1The Holdall that started it.  I received the bag as a gift in 2003 and it’s served me well as a work bag, overnight holdall and gym / sailing tote. It feels like the SUV of holdalls, practical but smart, roomy but compact.

Over a decade of use and it still looks new.  Victorinox know manufacturing; they understand the long-term approach to Brand Allegiance and despite appearing expensive, it’s usually cheaper to only buy something once.
